Lucy bought this notebook for us to write a letter in to each other every year near our anniversary. If you got to this page then you have the special honour (or not) of reading my draft of what I'm gonna write to her for December 17th, 2009:
Lucy, you know you're a princess and you've often said I rescued you when I married you. Here's a little story I made up of us in an alternate life. Don't worry, I'm not gonna make you change your life, I'm just using this as a creative way to say how I love you!
If we met each other in the old American West, I'd get myself all cleaned up (even if I'd already washed that month) and I'd shave and get my haircut and I'd meet you with my hat humbly (but nervously) in my hands. I'd ask you to go to the barn-dance with me and I'd enjoy watching your long billowy dress sway and flow as you move 'round the dancefloor. Later I'd sit on the front porch swing with you while we drank homemade lemonade and while your parents kept an eye on us, , through the window to make sure we didn't get to close. Maybe we'd be holding hands by now, but we'd talk just like we did when we were getting to know each other and like we still do now!
I'd ask you to marry me and I'd be over the moon to hear you say, "Yes, Please". I think I'd have to go into the local saloon and buy everyone a round of drinks, even though that'd not be my hangout. I'd have to share my joy! I'd build us our own log cabin with help from other men in our little town. While chopping the tree trunks and trimming them for the frame of our home I'd have an accident with the axe and need some stitches and some first aid. I'd put on a brave face and act tough but secretly enjoy you making a fuss over my injury. I like it when you look after me just like I like looking after you.
We'd spend our wedding night in our very own bed, and enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery and making love on our honeymoon. We'd come back, you teaching the children in the one room schoolhouse, but I'd already be planning to make you pregnant and take you away from those kids to give you our own! The winters would be cold in our "detached bungalow" but our hot water bottles would help to warm us and we'd find fabulous other ways that warmed us up even better!
You'd be great in the untamed west, as you work so hard and are so tough (but still oh so sexy and feminine). We'd build our home together over the years and Dan and Simon and Ian would grow so quickly. I can imagine a rabid wolf being reported in the area and me taking Daniel to hunt it down with our rifles. We'd find it and shoot it dead, just part of the job of protecting my Bride and Boys. We'd come home with some rabbits to skin as well as a story of our battle with the deadly wolf. You'd be so proud of your men and you'd make a fantasic meal of the rabbits and veggies from our garden.
We'd enjoy watching the Boys grow into fine young men as the snow gave way to the newly budding leaves on the trees. We'd weather the storms (all kinds) and we'd see the Boys marry and start their own families while we enjoy growing (a little) older together. Marriage just gets better, as does knowing you and talking to you and enjoying being together.
